The original name, Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor "Quasi una fantasia", Op. 27, No. 2, was completed in 1801 and dedicated to his pupil Countess Giulietta Guicciardi. The first movement that you're listening to became popularly known as the Moonlight Sonata, for the German music critic Ludwig Rellstab likened it to moonlight shining off the water of Lake Lucerne.
